The United Methodist Church grew out of a reform and renewal movement within the Church of England led by John Wesley (1703–1791) and his brother, Charles (1707–1788). The Methodist movement grew and spread to the 1800s. To meet the needs of the migrating population, churches were organized under local leadership and visited regularly by a preacher who was responsible for a circuit of churches.
