Lay persons are also called to assist in God's work in the church. Each Sunday,
a lay person assists the pastor in conducting the worship service. Members of the congregation can
be found greeting people before the service, serving as ushers, or assisting
with communion. Other volunteers straighten the pews after the service or direct people who
enter from the back of the church upstairs to the sanctuary. A lay person usually
conducts the “children’s sermon,” and another assists in the nursery during the
service. All members who volunteer for one of these tasks will be assigned on a
rotating schedule.
